Shifts in global drivers of environmental investment prompts thematic development for Jupiter’s environmental team << Back

Charlie Thomas, Head of Environmental Investment at Jupiter, believes that environmental investing is moving towards a new era, as the traditional trends give way to issues that are affecting broader society. To better address this shift in emphasis, the environmental investment team at Jupiter has decided to change the way it describes the investment opportunities on its range of funds*. They will now refer to three broad categories - infrastructure, resource efficiency and demographics, rather than the six green investment themes** used previously.

While this change is not expected to have any material impact on the decision-making process of the investment team, the team believes that the new categories better reflect the way environmental issues will become embedded in mainstream economic activity in future years.

Charlie comments: "Investment in environmental solutions businesses is no longer a niche enterprise, but is rather about investment in the long-term structural growth of the global economy. Demands of an increasing global population on the world's finite resources, for example, are likely to make environmental solutions businesses ever more fundamental to sustainable economic growth.

"We believe that our categories have evolved towards a more integrated approach and that these broader areas better capture the link between issues relating to the society, economies and environmental issues."

New category descriptions:

. Infrastructure - there has been a marked increase in global infrastructure spending in recent years as emerging economies look to support rapid growth and mature economies seek to modernise. This is creating opportunities for businesses involved in renewable energy generation, smart electrical grids, clean and wastewater systems, transport infrastructure and communication networks. Examples of currently held stocks include Vestas Wind Systems, one of the largest wind turbine manufacturers globally and Vossloh, a rail infrastructure company.

. Resource efficiency - increased global demand for natural resources has stimulated significant investment in resource efficiency. This is creating opportunities for businesses involved in energy and water efficiency, waste recycling, air pollution technology among others. Examples of stocks held include Schnitzer Steel, a US steel recycler and Regal Beloit, which produces energy efficient electrical motors.

. Demographics - growing populations and changing demographic patterns around the world create unique challenges when it comes to environmental and economic sustainability. These challenges have created opportunities for businesses that are providing sustainable, low impact solutions in sustainable consumption, public transport, health, agriculture and education. Examples of current stocks held in this category include Whole Food Markets, the US retailer of organic and healthy produce and Shimano, a leading supplier of cycling systems.

Jupiter has long been at the forefront of green and environmental investment with the launch of the first green unit trust in the UK, the Jupiter Ecology Fund, 23 years ago. Charlie Thomas leads the team which includes Chris Watt, fund manager of the Jupiter Environmental Income Fund and Abbie Llewellyn-Waters, Equities Analyst. Charlie has been the lead manager of the Jupiter Ecology Fund since September 2003. The fund management team is supported by Jupiter's long established Sustainable Investment and Governance team, headed by Emma Howard Boyd, who undertake the environmental and ethical approval process.

Charlie Thomas, Head of Environmental Investment, said: "We believe that we are at an inflection point in environmental investing and we want to ensure that we remain ahead in addressing this global attitudinal, economic and societal shift. However, our fundamental bottom-up approach to picking companies which we believe provide the best opportunities to make our investors' money over the long term, will not change."
