The Board of Jupiter China Sustainable Growth Ltd regrets to announce that it has decided not to proceed with the launch of the Company at this time.
While Jupiter received a high level of interest in the proposed launch, commitments from prospective investors unfortunately fell just short of the $50m that the Company believed was required as a minimum launch size.
Richard Pavry, director of investment trusts at Jupiter Asset Management, said: "While we received significant interest from both institutional and private investors, the challenging global economic and market environment has meant that certain prospective institutional investors have been unable to commit to their early indications of interest. The Board felt that to proceed at a lower launch size would not be appropriate as the proportion of the market capitalisation that a small number of institutions would represent in the Company's register of shareholders would be unattractive given the limited liquidity available to closed ended funds in the current markets. We are obviously disappointed not to go ahead with the launch at this time as we believe the long term investment opportunities from the transformation of the Chinese domestic economy are significant."
Jupiter remains committed to the investment opportunity represented by Jupiter China Sustainable Growth Ltd and will continue to pursue the investment themes identified by the fund manager, Philip Ehrmann, going forward. Some of these themes will continue to be reflected in the portfolio of the Jupiter China Unit Trust. This Fund has gained 31.60% since the project to launch the Company was started in October 2008, compared with 13.81% for the IMA Asia Pacific Excluding Japan sector. Since launch the Fund has gained 11.20% against -2.13% for the sector average.*
