Jupiter Absolute Return Fund

Philip Gibbs has been managing a range of funds at Jupiter for over 10 years, including offshore absolute return strategies, and is considered one of the leading investment managers in the UK.

The Jupiter Absolute Return Fund aims to generate an absolute return, independent of market conditions, by investing on a global basis. Philip can utilise a range of assets including equities, equity related securities (including derivatives), cash, near cash, fixed interest securities, currency exchange transactions, index linked securities, money market instruments and deposits. At times the portfolio may be concentrated in any one or a combination of such assets and, as well as holding physical long positions, Philip may also create synthetic long and short positions through derivatives.

Fund manager
Philip Gibbs has managed the Fund since launch in December 2009.

Key fund facts

  • The core aim of this fund is to generate positive absolute returns independent of market conditions.
  • By having access to a wide range of assets, including the option to employ short strategies (i.e. with the aim of profiting when stock prices fall) through the use of derivatives, the Fund provides the retail investor with access to Philip's skills as an absolute return manager.
  • The Fund is an absolute return fund and has a more sophisticated risk profile than a traditional equities unit trust.
  • Using derivatives may expose the Fund to periods of performance volatility. However Philip anticipates that, over the long term, the Fund will be less volatile than a traditional long-only equities fund, although this cannot be guaranteed.
  • Philip has a strong long-term performance record in both his long-only strategies and his long/short offshore portfolio.

Please note that this Fund has a performance fee (15% above a Hurdle Rate and High Water Mark) - for more details, please read the Key Features Document (incorporating the Simplified Prospectus).

Please remember past performance should not be seen as a guide to future returns.

The value of an investment in a unit trust and the income from it can fall as well as rise and may be affected by exchange rate variations and you may not get back the amount you invested.

Performance data source: Financial Express, net income reinvested at UK basic rate of tax to 31/05/2010. For confirmation of individual fund launch dates, please see the Fund Information tab of the All Funds table. The OBSR Ratings are as at 31/05/2010. The Citywire ratings shown are the three year ratings as at 31/05/2010. Lipper ratings are sourced from Lipper as at 31/05/2010. Please see the online glossary within the help section for further definition of these ratings.

Derivative risk: The use of derivatives to speculate as to the direction a market index, currency or share will move can cause periods of high volatility. The Fund may incur losses greater than its original investment into derivative contracts (although unit holders will not incur any liabilities beyond their initial investment). The Fund is able to gain market exposure in excess of its net asset value which can increase or decrease the value of units to a greater extent than would have occurred had no additional market exposure beyond the funds net asset been in place. The Fund value is unlikely to increase and decrease in line with the respective markets it invests into. Further information is contained within the Key Features (incorporating Simplified Prospectus).
