A new book exploding the myths of fund investing has been published this week by Harriman House Publishing. Fundology - The Secrets of Successful Fund Investing*, reveals how private individuals can use the secrets of the UK's most successful fund of funds manager, John Chatfeild-Roberts, to become expert fund investors.

In this jargon-free guide, Chatfeild-Roberts, who, together with his team, has won a series of awards for his skills as a multi-manager** explains how funds work, how to pick managers and, how to avoid common investment mistakes. He dispels many perceived wisdoms, arguing, for example, that contrary to popular belief, there are managers capable of consistently beating the stock market.

He said: "My problem with studies claiming to show that picking the best funds is virtually impossible to do, and that costs are all that matter, is that it flies in the face of common sense. How can it be that there are plenty of investors who lose money to the market consistently? Somebody has to be profiting at their expense."

He also takes to task those who argue that trackers are the best option for investors: "A passive index-tracking fund is almost guaranteed to do one thing and that is to underperform the index that it is trying to track by roughly the amount of its charges."

Chatfeild-Roberts says investors should not put up with this mediocrity and shows how anyone can identify the best active managers. He explains how, for example, to use past performance as a guide to future returns, directly opposing the FSA's view that past performance is no guide to the future. He states: "The past performance of a fund manager can tell you quite a lot about how they might invest, and therefore can give you some guide as to what their performance might be like in the future."

He also shares some of the lessons he has learned - the most important being that, despite all the technical analysis used to assess funds, it is people that make the difference in fund management. "There are a few very good ones around, though not that many exceptional ones. Investment is an art not a science."

Commenting on the book's publication, Chatfeild-Roberts, head of the Jupiter Independent Funds Team, said: "The pensions crisis illustrates how it is becoming increasingly important for every individual to take greater control over how their money is invested. I hope my experiences and the practical advice I have given will help every investor make the most of their money."
