Jupiter sponsors new ‘Big Idea’ category for the 2008 Observer Ethical Awards, - Deadline for entries 14th March 2008 - << Back

The deadline for entries to the Jupiter 'Big Idea' award - part of The 2008 Observer Ethical Awards - is fast approaching. This new award is being sponsored by Jupiter as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for the Jupiter Ecology Fund.  This Fund, which invests worldwide in companies which demonstrate a positive commitment to the long term protection of the environment, celebrates its milestone anniversary on 1st April 2008.

The 'Big Idea' category rewards individuals, businesses or groups who have devised a green initiative that has had, or could have, a large impact on their community.  Entries can include a community composting project or a local campaign to increase recycling.  All entries must be received by 14th March 2008.  See below for further information.  The Observer Ethical Awards, sponsored by Ecover, are instrumental in progressing ethical thinking and ideas in the UK. The public is invited to submit votes and nominations for those ideas that will make a difference to the future of the planet. The main aim of the awards is to highlight those who give ethical living a mainstream and practical appeal.

The short list of potential winners will be voted for by readers and decided upon by an expert and celebrity panel, which includes Jupiter's Head of Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Emma Howard Boyd, actor Colin Firth and British adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild.  The winner will receive £2000 and there will also be awards of £500 for two runners up.

Emma Howard Boyd, Head of SRI at Jupiter comments: "This annual event makes a valuable contribution to the growing awareness among consumers of green initiatives.  The Jupiter 'Big Idea' category is an exciting addition to this year's awards and we look forward to hearing about people's innovative and creative ideas for a greener world.

"Jupiter is one of the few companies which has a long history of successfully investing in 'green' companies.  We believe it is of vital importance to understand the myriad of issues around this area of investment and to be passionate about your subject and so we commit significant resource to achieving this."
